Chestnut oak is a montane species that is found on rocky ridge tops in its native range, making it an excellent candidate for planting where other trees may not grow well. Being in the white oak family the acorns contain less tannins and are sought after by wildlife more so than say red oak that have acorns high in tannins. Chestnut oak is also a host species for the imperial moth, as well as multiple species of hairstreak and duskywing butterflies.
