This is an interesting edible native plant. It produces edible tubers that can be used like potatoes, but also produces seed pods that when young can be eaten like snap peas and when dried the seeds can be used like dried beans. The plant itself is in the legume family so it does fix its own nitrogen into the soil. It sprouts from the ground in the spring and grows a climbing herbaceous vine. In the summer in gets clusters of pale pink flowers that have a familiar legume shape similar to a pea flower. They are a great candidate for a raised bed with a trellis, the bed contains the tubers making them easier to find and harvest. They can also be grown in large bins or planters.
