Space Required: 40-50 ft wide. They eventually can reach over 100 ft tall.

Shagbark hickory is a beautiful tree with its scaly bark and meandering canopy it has an almost whimsical look in the landscape. It is also one of those trees that generations will enjoy with some specimens living up to 350 years and growing up to 130 ft tall. Shagbark hickory is also the host plant for many species of moth caterpillars including some of the giant silk moths like the luna moth, polyphemus moth, and the hickory horned devil. The nuts that the trees produce also feed many species of native mammals, primarily squirrels.
